The Free Voice Organization expresses its deep concern and shock regarding the legal proceedings targeting Freedom Flotilla activists for their peaceful humanitarian and solidarity activities. These measures represent a dark stain on the history of the Tunisian judiciary, which has historically championed the Palestinian cause, and a serious setback for the principles of freedom of expression and civic engagement. They raise serious questions about the extent to which the authorities respect their constitutional and international obligations in protecting fundamental rights and freedoms. Instead of valuing civil initiatives that support just causes, especially the Palestinian cause, the authorities are resorting to mechanisms of criminalization and repression, which threaten the integrity of the judiciary and undermine public trust in the justice system. We also believe that targeting activists for their involvement in peaceful, humanitarian initiatives is part of a broader policy to silence independent voices and sets a dangerous precedent that will intimidate civil society actors and deter all forms of legitimate solidarity.
Therefore, Free Voice:
- Strongly condemns these prosecutions, deeming them unjustified and a violation of fundamental rights.
- Calls for the immediate cessation of all politically motivated legal proceedings.
- Demands respect for the freedom of civil action and guarantees that the judiciary will not be used to settle scores or suppress opinions.
- Holds the authorities fully responsible for the repercussions of this course of action on the climate of freedoms in the country.
The defense of rights and freedoms is indivisible, and any infringement upon them, regardless of its justification, represents a dangerous slide that must be confronted.
